Any content warnings?
Some things to keep in mind:
- If you post gifs and videos, remember not everyone has high speed internet, and consider linking rather than embedding, if you include more than one or two.
- Please warn for big triggers and label NSFW content in gifs or videos!
- When linking to sources for your movies, please leak only to legal sites, YouTube and/or archive.org. Other sites can be shared in your letters, or via the mods, if you prefer.
- If you are trying to find one of the movies mentioned either here on in the tagset and can't find it, please email the mods at classicfilmexchange@gmail.com and we're happy to help with grayer market resources!
Olivia (1951)
Title: Olivia (1951)
How can people watch it?: On youtube.
What is it about?:
Olivia arrives at an all-girls boarding school, where the pupils are divided in two camps: some favor the charismatic headmistress Mlle Julie, and some the emotionally erratic Mlle Cara, who suffers from a mystery illness and appears to have some history with Mlle Julie. Olivia quickly falls in love with Mlle Julie, becoming increasingly obsessed with her as Mlle Julie both incites and rejects her affection.
What do you love about it?
Toxic yuri. Olivia’s intense obsession. Mlle Julie’s commanding presence, the way she demands adoration. Olivia’s sexual awakening also being an intellectual awakening and a liberation. The otherworldly quality of the boarding school. The Christmas ball where half the girls are crossdressing. All those subtle sensual gestures and touches. A variety of charming side characters. The fact that the film was directed by a woman.
Content warnings:
the underage student/teacher relationship, death of an lgbt character

The Strange One (1957)
Title: The Strange One (1957)
How can people watch it?: On youtube or archive.org.
What is it about?:
Charismatic Cadet Staff Sergeant Jocko De Paris of a Southern military academy delights in tormenting his fellow cadets. Things eventually get out of hand.
What do you love about it?
So Hays Code is in full effect but what you need to know is that nothing in this film really makes sense if you don’t acknowledge that De Paris is a repressed homosexual and a sadist and that everything he does to other men, from getting them drunk to brutalizing them, is an expression of his sexual desires, and rage. The film isn’t particularly subtle about it all. Jocko De Paris is also just really hot*.
Besides having sexual tension with everyone, De Paris's has a lovely dynamic with another cadet, which he calls “Cockroach”, who is also gay, and wrote a whole damn novel glorifying De Paris's brutality.
